Christianity21

Christiantity21 was a groundbreaking event.  Held in October, 2009, it brought together 21 of the top Christian thinkers, each of whom had 21 minutes to share one idea that they though would shape the Christian faith in the 21st century.  And all of the presenters happened to be women.

The Moltmann Conversation
In what has become the hallmark event of Emergent Village, JoPa Productions is thrilled to welcome Jürgen Moltmann as the dialogue partner for the 2009 Emergent Theological Conversation. Moltmann, one of the premier theologians of the 20th century, is known as the “theologian of hope.” This will be a unique opportunity to sit in conversation with a renowned theologian who has shaped the theological landscape.

Since 2000, Emergent Village has facilitated an annual gathering of intimate conversation with some of the leading thinkers in theology and philosophy. Past interlocuters have included Nancey Murphy, Dallas Willard, Stanley Hauerwas, Walter Brueggemann, Miroslav Volf, John Caputo, and Richard Kearney. In each case, an academic luminary is put into conversation with pastors – no notes, no papers delivered, no formality – simply a conversation about things that matter.

The Great Emergence
The Great Emergence National Event was a unique and freshly designed event built on both innovative adult learning techniques including interaction andw participation, and inspiring content on the current state of and future possibilities for Christianity.

Around the four main sessions with Phyllis Tickle, participants enjoyed the daily office—thrice daily times of prayer—based on Phyllis Tickle’s bestselling book, The Divine Hours, in the majestic and historic Cathedral of St. Mary in Memphis, Tennessee, which was bedecked with Advent greenery.

Workshops offered some of the best practitioners of emergent Christianity, including Tim Keel, Peter Rollins, and Lisa and Will Samson. And don’t forget all that Memphis has to offer: Graceland, blues on Beale Street, Sun Studios, the National Civil Rights Museum, and world renowned bar-b-que!

The Church Basement Roadshow
Emergent Church Leaders Toured the Country in an RV with a Rollicking 21st Century Roadshow Revival of that Old Time Religion The Church Basement Roadshow: A Rollin’ Gospel Revival.” The tour featuring Tony Jones, Doug Pagitt and Mark Scandrette will hit thirty-two cities across the U.S., with a message that combines old time revival flair with a 21st century gospel. They’ll preach, sing and sell healing balm in church basements from San Diego to New York.

Jones, author of The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier; Pagitt, author of A Christianity Worth Believing; and Scandrette, author of Soul Graffiti: Making a Life in the Way of Jesus, are part of the emergent movement, a decade-old phenomenon of pastors, missionaries, artists, theologians, authors and “regular people” who are rethinking church and Christianity for a globalized world. Controversial for their “nothing is too sacred to be questioned” doctrine, Jones, Pagitt, and Scandrette have acquired many fans and critics based on their writings.
